IF YOU HAVE READ OR ARE READING ANY OF MY TOLKIEN FANFICTIONS, PLEASE READ THIS ALL THE WAY THROUGH. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT.
~~
Well guys, I have some rather disappointing news. Some of you have probably already heard about this, especially if you're a member of MiddleEarthLovers here on DA and have read their latest announcement.
I have been informed by a friend that the Tolkien Estate, which is owned by Tolkien's son, daughter-in-law, and grandson, and owns the rights to his work, do not allow fanfictions.
Yeah, you read that right. Essentially, any and all fanfictions based on Tolkien's work are illegal. And yes, I believe that counts for fanfictions based on adaptations of Tolkien's work in media.
Here is the link to the page on their website that states their stance on fanfictions:
www.tolkienestate.com/en/paths…As you can see, they are pretty clear about where they stand on this. Now, as of yet, the Estate has not made any active efforts to halt the publication of non-commercial fanfictions on the internet, just the commercial ones. But this is probably due to how much time and money it would take to take legal action against every single person posting fanfictions on the internet.
However, that doesn't change the fact that all Tolkien fanfictions are basically illegal, so I myself have chosen to comply with the rule, partly to avoid any potential legal issues and partly out of respect for the Professor and his family.
This means that all my Tolkien fanfictions that are currently on DA and FF. net will be taken down, and all my unfinished series such as...
-The Healer's Student
-The Pen is Mightier
-My Pet...will be discontinued on here for a very long time. I say that because this rule will not be permanent; it will just be in effect until the rights to Tolkien's work enter the Public Domain, which probably won't be until the year 2044. It's not entirely clear.
I also will not be posting any new Tolkien stories either, if that wasn't obvious already.
However, my....

Song parodies/rewrites
...will stay because they are protected under the Fair Use Law.
I will point out that here on DA, I will not be deleting the deviations, just putting them into storage. That way I can easily retrieve them and put them back into my gallery without having to go through the process of re-uploading each and every single one of them, just in case the law changes somehow. I wouldn't hold my breath for that if I were you guys, though.
IMPORTANT NOTE #2!
To all my watchers (and those just reading this while passing through) who have Tolkien fanfictions, whether already written or in the works, I strongly suggest you guys do the same. Whether out of respect for Professor Tolkien and his family or just to avoid any possible legal issues that may arise, it would be best if you guys complied with the rule as well.
Of course, you guys don't have to delete your stories. Just do what I'm doing and put them into storage. Here's a guide to help you with that process:
Managing Your Deviations- A Hidden Menu!Community Week
Did You Know...
...DeviantART has a mass storage system of all your gallery deviations?...you can manage all of your gallery deviations from one location?...you can move deviations into "Storage" and essentially remove them from your gallery while preserving the page view, favorite, download, and other statistics?
THIS IS ALL 100% POSSIBLE!
Many of us have deviations in our galleries that you no longer have the computer file for and would be devastated if you lost them… Ever thought, "I really don't want to download each deviation to my computer or sta.sh but I just don't want them in my gallery any longer! Then there's a handful of deviations I want to turn off comments for. I wonder if this can be done all at once?" If this is you... Keep Reading!
Also, if you have stories on other websites like tumbler, AO3, FF.net etc, please do the same over there as well.
And while you're at it, please be sure to spread the word. Tell your watchers and readers about this, and tell them to tell
their watchers and reader to tell
their watchers and readers, and so on and so forth. The more people who know about this, the better.
If you are also worried about the legality of other stories you have based on other fandoms, here's a link to a page that will help you:
www.standoutbooks.com/fan-fict…BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
This may be a very frustrating thing to read right now, especially for all of you who have been waiting for ages for me to update certain stories. You guys know who you are.
However, you will be relieved to hear that although I will not be writing or updating any Tolkien fanfictions on here, there is still a chance for me to continue sharing my stories with you.
Right now, I am currently working on setting up a Facebook group which I will use as a way to share my stories with whoever wants to keep reading them (which is most likely all of you.)
The group hasn't been made yet, mainly because I've been trying to find a way to conveniently share stories to lots of people simultaneously via message, and because I'm trying to come up with a good name for it (ideas, anyone?)
So, keep a lookout for my next status or journal update for the link to the group, when I make it.
Another thing, although I was initially making this group as a means for me to share
my stories, I have decided to allow the group to double as a fanfiction exchange. So, if any of you want to keep sharing your stories with friends after taking them down, you may do so in the group. Just remember that all fanfictions must be shared via message only. The group will also be a closed group, for those of you who want to keep your fanfiction addiction a secret from your family and friends on Facebook that you don't want to see.
Anyway, until the link shows up, I want to thank everyone who has faithfully read and followed my stories on here. You guys have been so awesome! Thank you for being so patient and understanding, especially on the many occasions when my Muse decided to not cooperate. Thank you for all the wonderful feedback you guys have given my stories. I appreciate every single one of your comments and faves, no matter how excessive.
See you on Facebook!
